Writing Exercise
Think of a childhood toy, your favorite. Put your favorite toy into your current writing.
Side Note
I have picked a toy cat I have had since I was a little girl. My youngest now owns it and I wanted to take a picture for this exercise to add to my blog so you all could see it. But she doesn’t know where they put it. The cat can’t move and lays down only. His name is Target. I am putting Target into my current book, Secret School, about the demons and demon hunters. I just made up a scene and hope you like reading it.

Scout sat on her bed, staring out the window, and watched as a bird flew past on its hunt for worms. She grabbed her favorite cat toy, Target, and gently pet his black head down his tan body. She continued to stroke Target, thinking about school. Scout wasn’t sure if she had heard what Mr. Powers talking to Officer Higgins correctly.
“Target, I thought I heard Mr. Powers tell Officer Higgins that a demon had broken into the school office the other day,” Scout said when she looked away from the window and looked into the yellow cat eyes of Target. “Should I ask Officer Higgins about it?”
Target stared at Scout blankly. Scout groaned and fell sideways on her bed, cuddling Target closer to her. “Target, what do I do? Officer Higgins is a friend of mine and all, but would she tell me anything that important if I asked her?”
Silence filled the room while Scout waited for an answer from Target from anywhere. Target just laid beside her, his face buried in the covers of her bed. Scout curled up around Target, torn about what she should do. Talk to Officer Higgins about what she had heard, or thought she had heard, or go about her school days as if she had heard nothing.
At that moment, she wished Target could talk to her. She looked at the toy as she pet him again. “Thanks for at least listening to me, Target. I guess I will leave it alone for now and just keep my ears open. If I hear anything again about a demon breaking in, then I will ask Officer Higgins.” Scout sighed heavily as she nuzzled the toy and closed her eyes for a quick nap before dinner.
