My Writing
Scout stared at the menu as she sat in a little cafe. She had gone there to do some homework alone and to eat, of course, around noon time that bright Saturday. Her waitress, Jenny, walked over to her table and asked Scout what she would like for lunch.
Scout ordered: A. the soup of the day
Scout ordered: B. the taco salad
Or Scout ordered: C. the cheeseburger and fries
Scout looked up at Jenny. “I’ll have your cheeseburger, side of fries, and a Dr. Pepper, please. And I would like the tomato, onion, and pickles on the side. Medium well for the burger.”
Jenny jotted it down on her pad of paper and headed off to the kitchen to turn in the food ticket and to get Scout her drink. Scout pulled out her notebook and math book. She worked on her math before Jenny returned with her drink. She continued to work until Jenny came back carrying a plate with a juicy medium well cheeseburger with fries and the other items on the side. Scout thanked Jenny and took off the top bun. She placed the pickles and onion on top of it. But when she picked up the tomato, it slipped out of her fingers and plopped down on her math book, then slid off onto the floor.
“Oh no, my book and my tomato.” Scout groaned and looked around for Jenny.
Jenny saw Scout waving at her, and she hurried over to the table. “Is everything okay?”
“No, I dropped my tomato on the floor,” Scout said as she used her napkin to wipe off her book.
“Don’t worry, I’ll go get you a new one,” Jenny said with a little laugh. “That happens more times than you think.” She walked back towards the kitchen to get a new tomato for Scout.
By the time Scout had finished wiping her hands and book off, Jenny was back with a little plate with two fresh tomato slices. Scout thank Jenny and apologized for the mess under the table. Jenny told her not to worry about it, that they will clean it up once she was gone. Jenny left to go take orders from a table that had just been seated, leaving Scout alone again.
Scout carefully placed the two slices on her burger and added a little salt, mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup. She placed the top back on the burger and leaned over her plate before she took a bite. Mayo, ketchup, and mustard squeezed out onto her plate while the juices of the meat squirted into her mouth. The melted cheese stuck to the roof of her mouth for a moment, and it brought a smile to her face.
Scout put her burger down and wiped her hands off with her napkin. She salted her fries, squirted ketchup on her plate, and dunked a few fries. She bit into them before she returned to her math homework. She spent a good few hours eating, sipping on her drink, and finishing her homework. Once she was done, she thanked Jenny again for the new tomatoes, packed up her bag, paid for the meal, and headed out, glad to be done with her homework. Scout pulled out her phone and called her best friends to see if they had finished their homework and wanted to hang out. She headed for her car, excited to meet up with Katlyn and Jennifer at the movie theater.
