Writing Exercise
Think about the most deafening sound that you have ever heard. Describe it and use it in a short story.
Side Note
When I was younger and living at home, my parents had an old TV> I could hear the very deafening ring of the high pitch frequencies. I can still hear it from time to time from TVs, radios, the wires outside, in stores. And if I hear it for too long, it makes me physically sick. No one else can hear them, too. I know because I asked. So I will use this bit of information and I will use Scout and her mom as my character for a short story about this.
My Writing
Scout walked into her mom’s favorite clothing store, Goodie Goodie Clothing. She was meeting her mom there to check out some jeans since Scout needed a few new pairs, her old ones finally giving to the holes. She didn’t notice it right away, but as soon as she walked further into the store, the high-pitched frequency from some bad wiring slapped her ears. Scout shook her head, pressing her hands against her ears as if that would push the sound away.
“Scout?”
Scout looked up when she heard a muffled voice call out her name and saw her mom weaving her way around clothes racks to get to her. Scout flinched, but she put her hands down. Her mom placed a hand on her shoulder, leading her back to the teen area.
“I’m glad you made it. I found some really nice jeans and even a few cute tops,” her mom said. “Let’s get this done fast. Are you okay?”
Scout let her mom lead her to the section and flinched again, the screeching sound banging against her eardrums. “Yea, I’m okay, but the sound…”
Her mom smiled at her. “Okay, try on the clothes I found, tell me what you want, and then get out of here before you get sick from the sounds.”
“Thanks for understanding, mom.” Scout took the clothes her mom held out to her and hurried to the fitting room. Scout tried on the clothes as quickly as she could. She changed back into her clothes when she was done and practically ran to her mom as the sound amplified in her ears. “Okay, I will take all the jeans. The green shirt didn’t fit and I don’t like the orange ones. But I like the rose-colored long sleeve shirt, the denim jacket, and the two short sleeve blue shirts.”
Her mom took the clothes. “Got it, now go.”
Scout made her way out of the store, doing her best to not run or bring attention to herself, but it felt like her ears were bleeding. She made it outside in the fresh air and sighed in relief. The door closed behind her, shutting out the horrific high-pitched sound. She leaned against the wall while she waited for her mom. Her mom walked out with several bags in hand and handed Scout three of them. She kept five bags for herself. Scout raised her eyebrows at her and chuckled.
“What? I found a few things for myself and for your dad.” Her mom clung to the bags. “And there was a huge sale.”
Scout laughed and shook her head. “Come on, mom. Let’s go have some lunch at our favorite burger joint.” She linked arms with her mom and they walked down the sidewalk, headed for Cheeseburger Heaven.
