Chapter 1
Ronny sat in his chemistry class, tapping his thumbs against his notebook. His teacher drones on about the test in a few days. Ronny stares at the board when the classroom door opens. The principal enters with a shy girl. She looks around and smiles.
Ronny hears the girls sitting close to him giggling and making fun of the girl already. He glances over to the group of twittering girls. One of them looks his way and he makes sure she sees him roll his eyes at her. She laughs at him, but Ronny turns his attention back to the girl. The principal clears his throat and glares at the group.
“I’d like to introduce you to Ingrid. She joins us from Holland. I expect you all to treat her with respect,” he says, nearly spitting out the word respect at the girls. “Ingrid, please take the seat next to Ronny.”
Ronny sits up and smiles as Ingrid walks to the empty desk next to him in the second row. Ingrid doesn’t smile back. She sits down, opens her bag, and ignores everyone in the class except for the teacher.
Once the class ends, Ronny follows Ingrid out of the classroom. “Hey, Ingrid, wait up.”
Ingrid glances back at him with her mesmerizing amber colored eyes. She walks off to the side and waits for Ronny to catch up. Ronny stops next to her and grins.
“Welcome to Springs High and I guess to Arizona, too.” He awkwardly holds out his hand to her.
Ingrid looks at his hand and gently takes it. She shakes it then quickly lets go. Ronny chuckles and spots her schedule.
“Do you know where you go next?” Ronny points at the folded paper she clutches.
Ingrid looks down at the paper then hands it to him. “No.”
Ronny takes it and opens, looking it over for a minute. “Oh, okay. I can show you where math class it. Just follow me.” Ronny hands her the schedule back and they walk to the next class together.
Along the way, they pass the group of girls from chemistry. They all laugh when they see us walking together.
“How sweet. Ronny has finally found himself a girlfriend,” one says, batting her eyelashes.
“Just took a strange girl from another country,” another one says.
They all laugh, and Ronny clenches his jaw. He flips them off, which makes them laugh at them more.
“Ignore them, Ingrid. They’re just ugly with jealousy because you’re way prettier than they are,” Ronny says. He shows Ingrid to her next class and runs off to get to his own class.
Ronny sits through history then hurries back to Ingrid’s class to see if she needs more help. When he gets there, she’s nowhere to be found. He shrugs and walks to his locker.
Ronny grabs the books and notebooks for his next classes then heads outside to find his friends. He tells them about Ingrid and a couple of his buddies who had math with her, tells him they met her.
“Cool, do you know where she went after class? I came looking for her, but she wasn’t there.”
“Oh yea, Wallace and I took her to her locker,” his friend, Titan, says.
“Good. Oh, just so you know they are going after her already,” Ronny says, glaring across the school yard at the group.
The four guys turn and glare at the group of girls as well. The rest of the break, Ronny talks to his friends, but also keeps an eye out for Ingrid. He doesn’t see her for the rest of the day.
