October 27- Bats
Faith and Melody giggled as they stood in front of a cave they were going to hike through on their double date. They were waiting for their boyfriends, Tory and Kieth, who had gone back to the car to grab their jackets after they had tried to walk inside. The cool air was too much for the four of them, so the guys had volunteered to go grab their jackets. Fatih and Melody peered into the darkness, their flashlights barely cutting through the inky blackness.
“Okay, ladies,” Tory said as he walked over to Melody. “We have the jackets.” He helped Melody get her jacket on while Keith helped Faith into hers.
Once everyone had their jackets on, they trooped into the cave. It was dark, cold, and they could hear water dripping further inside. They walked for a while until they found themselves in front of a large rock. The group looked for another way through and found a place they could easily squeeze through. The girls went first while the boys kept their lights forward so the girls could see their way. The girls shone their lights back for the guys as soon as they had made it through and watched as the guys squeezed their way to them. They continued hiking until they heard something in the distance. It sounded like something squeaking.
“Are there bats in here?” Faith asked, getting closer to Kieth.
Tory grinned. “There sure are. I hope we get to see them. I can hear them somewhere in front of us.”
Faith glanced at Tory. “Will they go in my hair?”
“Naw, they are sleeping right now,” Kieth said as he looked at his girlfriend. “Everything will be fine.” He took a hold of her hand and lead her through the cave until they heard the bats growing closer.
Melody and Tory glanced around the corner when they caught up to their friends. In front of them, they saw some bats flying around while others slept. Faith let out a small gasp when one flew towards them, then flew back to the others. She ducked her head down, still afraid it would get caught in her hair. Melody whispered something that caught her friend’s attention. They turned to look at her while she stared at the bats.
“Babe, did you say something?” Tory asked.
Melody looked at him and smiled. “I just said that they are beautiful, and I wondered what it was like to be a bat.” Her eyes glowed in the low flashlight lights. “Could you imagine flying like them?”
Kieth grinned. “That would be so cool.”
“I’d love to fly,” Faith said as she lifted her arms and flapped them like wings.
They all laughed when another piercing laugh joined theirs. They all went quiet and turned to look behind them. There were bats flying around an older woman with crazy gray hair. She cocked her head and laughed at their facials.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she said in a singsong voice. “Didn’t you see the sign that said to stay out?”
Melody, Tory, and Faith looked at Kieth, who cleared his throat. “Umm… there was no sign.”
“Because you took it down,” the old lady spat at him. “You brought your friends to their death, young man.” She grinned at them with cracked and lost teeth. Her laughter echoed through the cave, disturbing the bats.
The bats fall from the ceiling and soar towards them. The group screamed and waved their hands over their heads as the bats flew down. The few bats turned into a handful that turned into a swarm. They encircled the group of friends and dug their fangs into human flesh wherever they could bite. The old woman laughed and watched as Faith dropped to her knees. She tried to cover her face, but the bats wouldn’t let her hide for long.
She opened her eyes and watched as Melody fell under the weight of the bats as they landed on the poor girl. Faith screamed when a bat plucked out one of Melody’s eyes and flew off with it, a couple of others following behind it to share the snack. Behind her, Faith heard Tory and Kieth yelling somewhere to her left. She turned to see them swinging at the bats, trying to get the bats off each other, but they made no progress. Blood splattered on the ground and walls as the fangs kept ripping through flesh. Faith cried as a bat ripped her lip and another one bit into her nose. She tried to swat them away, but they clung to her face.
Melody curled up into a tight ball and succumbed to the many wounds the bats had created. She let out a final sigh and stared at the old lady with her one eye until everything went dark. Faith reached over and pushed on her friend’s shoulder. She swatted the bats from her face, but they wouldn’t stop. When Faith looked at Tory, she saw his face was bleeding, but he was staring at Melody. He fell to his knees and crawled over to her. Faith felt arms wrap around her and she was being lifted from the ground.
“Come on! Run!” Kieth yelled into her ear over the deafening flapping sound. Kieth grabbed her hand and pulled her away from Tory and Melody. She shielded her eyes and watched as Tory gave up.
Kieth and Faith didn’t make it too far into the other room as more bats fell on them from the ceiling. Faith tried to catch her breath, but the weight was too much. She felt Kieth’s hand in hers and she held on tight until the end. The bats flew off the bodies, having picked them clean. They only left behind blood and bones when they were done. The old lady looked at the carnage and giggled. She pushed her messy hair back behind her head and looked up at the bats as they settled over her on the ceiling.
“My good pets, I hope you enjoyed your treat. I am sure we’ll get you some more soon. I took that sign down ages ago.” She cackled and disappeared.
