October 11- Masquerade
As music floated through the ballroom, a young woman entered through the front door, her emerald green dress floating behind her. Her matching heels ticked on the tiled ground as she followed a few others into the ballroom for the Halloween masquerade ball. She adjusted her glittery light green mask as her sea-foam green eyes scanned the room. Couples giggled and danced around the floor while she stood off to the side. A young man with shaggy brown hair and deep blue eyes walked over to her with a smile on his face.
“Hi, would you care to dance?” He held his hand out to her.
“Oh, I’d love to,” she said and smiled. She placed her hand into his and picked up the side of her dress so she wouldn’t step on it. She had already done it a few times as she headed up the stairs to the building’s front door.
Her mystery date led her onto the dance floor and pulled her close. “I’m Max, by the way.”
“Jane,” she said and allowed him to twirl her around the dance floor. She stared into his captivating eyes, feeling as if she was in a dream.
The music changed, but Jane and Max continued to dance. The song was light and enchanting, just like the first. Song after song, those on the dance floor continued to dance. More people joined them as the night went on. Hour after hour, an invisible clock chimed from somewhere else in the building.
Jane felt like her feet were going to fall off and she looked around to see no one had left the dance floor yet. “I think we better take a break, Max,” she said as she looked at him again. “My feet are killing me.”
Max looked down at her and nodded. “I think you’re right. Let’s go sit down for a moment.”
They turned to walk off just as the song ended, but as soon as the new song started, their bodies were forced together. They were dancing again. Jane looked around, terrified, when someone screamed. She saw a few couples who had also tried to leave the dance floor collapse into a heap, their ankles visibly broken. They cried and tried to drag themselves off the ballroom floor, but instead they got up on their broken ankles and danced in agony. Max held onto Jane and they tried to dance towards the edge of the dance floor, but as soon as they were close enough, their feet forced them the other way.
People were crying, broken and dehydrated from dancing so much. Song after song, couples danced themselves to death as the night turned to morning. Jane and Max spun around the dead bodies, both tired and losing their strength. They knew they were going to die soon. Their bodies fell just as a clock chimed for the last time.
