Writing Exercise
Choose a scene from your current work in progress and write that scene in first person, second person, and third person.
Side Note
I did not use a scene from my current work in progress as I didn’t have it with me. I just made it up in my head on the fly. And I won’t like, I had some issues with this one at first because I have never written anything in second person. I actually had to look it up online in order to even figure out how to write in second person. But I figured it out. I will post 3 blogs, each blog being the scene written in each view.
My Writing- First Person
I sit on a bench, staring at the pond while fish lazily swim just under the surface. I hold a book in my hand that I have been trying to read for the past several minutes, but I couldn’t concentrate. I keep thinking about the upcoming dance and how I will be going alone again. I don’t mind really since I will take my writing things with me to work on my new fantasy book, but it would have been fun to go with some friends at least.
I lower my head when I hear someone laughing behind me and see Cindy and her soulless herd. She is the Queen at my school and always made my life miserable for no reason. I never said anything bad to her or made fun of her. But for someone reason, she loves to torment me. Jokes on her though, because in my new book, she is the antagonist, and she dies in the end. That thought makes me smile and I turn my attention back to my book, finally able to concentrate on my reading.
I finish reading a few chapters and stretch, checking my watch to see what time it is before I stand up. I see it is nearly 3 in the afternoon and decide to head home so I can get back to work on writing my book. I am eager to get to Cindy’s death scene.
I have no clue what second person is either. My attempts are third person, I believe. I’m terrible at it, but still I write in past tense. I believe that’s what mine typically sound like. Good job, but yes, write in the way you are most comfortable as it will come across better.
It was so awkward writing in second person. Definitely not going tonwrite that way again unless I do this again next year. I enjoy both first person and third, but lean more to third person too.
