Third Scene- Fear
Durwin’s marble gray eyes stared at the newspaper. He read the story about the family’s murder again, flinching at each detail he read. The family was renting a house only a few doors down from him.
Durwin ran his fingers over his buzzed head and closed his eyes. The family was a sweet family of four kids, the parents, and the father’s parents who had moved in with them just a week before the gruesome murders.
He had just gotten to know the family and now they were all gone. Durwin opened his eyes and shoved the newspaper away. He grabbed his fork from next to his plate and shoveled his food into his mouth so he wouldn’t be late for work.
A creak in his one-story house caused Durwin to jump in his seat. he turned to look behind him since he lived alone. Not seeing anything, he returned to eating his breakfast. Once done, Durwin got up and cleaned off his table, taking the dishes over to the sink. Again, there was a creak that made him freeze. Durwin grabbed the biggest knife from the knife block to him and stalked around the house, looking for whatever was making the sound.
His house did not creak like that unless someone was walking on the wood floors. Coming up empty-handed, Durwin put the knife back and finished cleaning his dishes. He laid them out so they could dry and headed back to his bedroom. Durwin dressed quickly, wanting to get out of his house as fast as he could since he felt so uneasy. The creaking made him nervous. He never heard his house settle so much in one morning.
As Durwin stared in the mirror, his blood froze in his veins and his eyes widened in terror as he watched the closet door behind him open. He had been in there not even five minutes ago and hadn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary or anyone hiding among his clothes. He couldn’t tear his gaze from the door, his breath coming out ragged as he stares into a pair of soulless eyes he had never seen before.
Durwin gripped his sink as the horror of seeing a man in his closet left him helpless. The man emerged from the closet and grinned at Durwin.
In one quick motion, the man stood behind Durwin and Durwin watched as his blood splattered across the mirror. The man wiped off the knife on his back and disappeared. Durwin crumbled to the ground and stared up at the ceiling with unblinking eyes. The closet door closed quietly behind him and the boogeyman left behind another victim.
