October 5th- Getting Dressed Up

Chapter 1

“I hate all of these,” Nick complained as he eyed the costumes.

Rick shrugged and picked a mummy costume, staring at it. “I guess I can go old school mummy.” He shrugged and walked off to find makeup to make himself scarier.

Nick sighed and looked over the costumes again. He pulled out an old-fashioned Dracula costume and looked it over. “These costumes are so dated.” He placed it back on the rack and picked up devil costume. Nick growled and went to find his friend in the makeup section. He found Rick at the end of the aisle, talking to someone. Nick walked over to him and saw a few girls.

Rick turned and saw his friend. “There you are,” he said and pulled his friend over to him. “Leslie and Beth, this is my best friend, Nick. Nick, meet Leslie and Beth.”

Nick shook their hands and tried to hide his costume behind his back. “Nice to meet you, ladies.” He saw Leslie try to see his costume. He cleared his throat and brought out the tacky devil costume.

Leslie grinned. “Cool.” She held up her costume. She was going as the Devil’s bride. “I guess you and I belong to each other then.” Leslie winked at Nick and giggled.

Nick laughed and scratched the back of his head as he looked back at the makeup. “Have you found any makeup yet?”

“Not yet.” She walked over to him and they walked back into the makeup aisle together. “I need some really red lipstick and other fun red makeup to make my costume look amazing.”

Nick nodded and looked around until he found some makeup he could use and grabbed it. He also grabbed lipstick for her and handed it to her. “Here you go.”

Nick and Rick continued to flirt with the girls until it was time to check out. They bought their costumes, makeup, and other items they’d use before they left the Halloween store. Nick grinned at Leslie and handed her his phone. She took it and added her number before she handed him hers. He typed it in and saved it for her. “So, see you for Halloween, my bride?”

Leslie took her phone back and giggled. “You better, hubby to be.”

Nick and Rick left the girls giggling and drove to get some lunch before they headed home for the day. Halloween was next week, and they had already planned to go to a party so they needed costumes. They were kicking themselves for having waited so long to get costumes, but they’d make do with what they had bought.

“Dude, we should totally do a double date with Leslie and Beth,” Rick said as he dropped Nick off at his house. “Call Leslie and I’ll call Beth tonight. Then we’ll make a plan.”

Nick leaned against the door and looked in at his friend. “You don’t find it weird that both girls are going as brides of our characters, do you?”

Rick laughed and shook his head. “Don’t be paranoid, man. They are just costumes, lame costumes true, but whatever. Those were probably the last costumes for the girls, just like ours were basically the last ones we could pick from.” He waved off his friend’s paranoia and drove off once Nick backed away from the car. He honked twice and waved as he turned at the end of the neighborhood.

Nick laughed at himself. “Yeah, I’m just being paranoid.” He looked down at the bag with his costume and headed inside to show his mom.

Chapter 2

Nick and Rick went out with Leslie and Beth a few days later. They went to a movie and dinner. The girls were acting a little weird. They were acting as if they were going to be getting married soon. Both girls wore rings on their left ring fingers and kept snuggling up close to the boys. They glared at other women when one would just merely glance at Nick or Rick. Rick was eating it up with Beth, but Nick was feeling uncomfortable. He was ready to leave at the end of the date, but Rick talked them into going to a nearby park to talk more.

Nick tried to talk Rick into leaving a few times, mentioning homework or work or how it was getting late, but each time Rick brushed him off. He looked at Leslie and smiled, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes. Something was wrong, and he knew it.

“Umm.. do you want to go for a walk, Leslie?” he asked as Beth and Rick sat on a bench making out.

“Sure,” she said and took a hold of his hand, dragging him away from his best friend.

Maybe I shouldn’t have suggested a walk. I should drag Rick away. Nick watched Leslie as she talked about Halloween and how she couldn’t wait to dress up as his bride. Nick just nodded and then turned her back towards where Rick and Beth were still making out.

Nick sat down on a bench across from his best friend and Beth and pulled Leslie down next to her. He was being paranoid again, and he just needed to relax. He placed an arm around her shoulders and she snuggled in close. The night was getting cooler since it was fall in middle Tennessee. They sat silently as they stared up at the sky.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” he randomly asked.

“It’s going to be even prettier on the night when you and I say I do and get married on Halloween.”

Nick looked at her, shocked and moved away from her. “What?”

Leslie laughed and shook her head. “I’m kidding.” She reached out for him, but Nick was done.

“We need to go… now!” Nick jumped off the bench and grabbed Rick, pulling him away from Beth.

Beth and Leslie pouted as Nick dragged Rick back to the parking lot. They followed slowly behind the guys and got into Rick’s car while Rick glared at Nick. He didn’t talk to Nick until they were alone in the car. Rick waved at the girls and sped off to the end of the street and slammed on his brakes.

Nick flew forward, but his seatbelt locked, and he yelped. “Jeez, Rick, what was that for?”

“I was with an angel tonight and you ruined it for me, man. What is your deal?” Rick turned in his seat and glared at Nick.

“Leslie started saying stuff, and it weirded me out. I had to get out of there and away from her.” Nick rubbed her arms. “She kept saying stuff about us getting married on Halloween.”

“She’s just saying that because she’s going to be dressed up like your bride. It doesn’t mean anything.” Rick drove Nick home. “Don’t mess up the party for me, got it?”

“Yeah…. I got it.” Nick hurried inside and closed the door, locking it. He peered out of the window and watched his friend drive off.  A dark green car drove past his house, slowing down as it was directly in front, then sped off. Nick leaned against the wall next to the window as he caught his breath. He didn’t recognize the car, and he dreaded thinking it was Leslie in the car. She hadn’t been to his house, and he planned to keep it that way.

Chapter 3

The night of the party came and Nick got ready in his devil costume. He applied the makeup he had bought, grabbed his pitchfork, and looked in the mirror. He looked okay, he guessed. He glanced at his watch and hurried outside where Rick stood leaning against his car. They high five each other, then climbed into their car. Nick itched his arm, then his leg. Rick scratched at his mummy costume from time to time as he drove them to Beth’s house, where the girls planned to meet them. Nick and Rick hopped out of the car and walked to the front door. Rick knocked, not wanting to waste any time.

Nick scratched the back of his neck as they waited, nervous. The door opened and Beth and Leslie emerged. They looked great in their mummy and devil bride costumes, a little too great.

“You look great, Beth,” Rick said as he took her hand and led her to the car, leaving Nick behind.

Leslie looked down and then smiled at him shyly. “Hi.” She held up her boutique and grinned. “Aren’t they beautiful?” She turned the dead flowers around in her hand so Nick could see them all.

“Uh, hi.” Nick held out his hand, and she took it. She hid her face behind her veil as he walked her to the car. They climbed into the back and Rick took off.

At the party, Nick did his best to stay away from Leslie, but she seemed to always find him. He kept itching at his face and clothes. He must be allergic to the makeup or the fabric. He walked into the bathroom and looked into his eyes, seeing that they weren’t their usual brown, but a murky yellow. “What the…?”

He ran out of the bathroom and saw Rick standing with his back to him. “Rick!”

Rick turned around and moaned at him, his own blue eyes glassy and dead looking. Rick grinned at him, then placed his arm around Beth’s shoulders. “Ready?”

Nick shook his head and felt someone place their arms around him. He looked to see Leslie was beside him with the same colored eyes. She smiled at him and flicked her tail. Wait? Did her tail move? He glanced back at his own devil tail and watched it move back and forth as if it had a mind of its own. But how? Nick shook his head and pushed Leslie away from him, running to the door. He rushed outside to get some fresh air, but the air wasn’t helping him any. He felt scared. What was going on?

Nick heard the door open behind him and Rick, Leslie, and Beth joined him. “Let’s go get married, my love.”

Nick held his hands up and ran. He wasn’t going to stay around and marry some chick he had just met. He wasn’t ready, and this was freaking him out. He made it home and ran inside, slamming the door behind him. He locked it and ran to find his parents.

“Mom? Dad?” Nick checked the living room, the kitchen, even their room, but no one was home. They still must be out trick-or-treating with his little sister, Mary. Nick collapsed on his bed and stared at the ceiling. What is going on? He shook his head and decided to change his clothes. He sat up and noticed he had left his pitchfork behind. He didn’t care. Nick got up and went to his drawer to get out his pajamas, but when he opened them, they were all red. A fiery hell red. Nick stepped back and looked at the mirror he had in his room. His eyes were still yellowish colored and his hair was perfect. He could never get his hair perfect.

Nick grabbed at the costume and tugged at it until it came off. He tossed it to the ground and grabbed for the horns he had added, since the fake ones that came with the costume had been cheesy. Nick tried to pull one off, but it wouldn’t budge. He yelped as it pulled on his skin. “No…no, no, no!” He ran in front of the mirror and looked at the horns. They were no longer just glued to his skin, they were a part of his skin. Nick then yanked at the tail, but it hurt. It wasn’t supposed to hurt.

“Not happening.” He decided to go to sleep. This had to be just a nightmare. He put on some of the strange pajamas, crawled into bed, and forced his eyes closed. Eventually, he heard the front door open and knew his family was home. He was too tired to get up and fell back to sleep. The next morning, he sat up and rubbed his eyes. He saw the costume on the ground and slowly crawled out of bed. Was he back to normal or…?

Nick looked into the mirror and screamed. Leslie sat up in bed and looked at him strangely. “Nick, darling, what’s wrong?”

Nick turned and looked at Leslie. She had a wedding band on her finger and the biggest smile. She still looked like she had last night at the party, still wearing the wedding dress and everything. He moved back away from her until he hit the wall.

“Come back to bed, darling.” She wickedly grinned at him. “My husband.” She laughed and held her hands out to him.

Nick shook his head and screamed again.
