October 17- Fall Leaves

Connor pushes his shaggy hair from his face and smiles. He knocks on the door in front of him and waits. He fixes the fall boutique in his hand, moving the red, orange, and yellow leaves around so they sit better around the flowers of the same colors. The door opens and his girlfriend, Krissy, peers out at him. He grins at her and holds out the boutique to her.

“Oh, Connor, these are beautiful,” she says and hurries into the kitchen to put them in water.

Connor follows her and smiles. “I’m glad you like them.” He sits down at the island and watches her fill a vase with water and mix in the flower food. “Are you ready to go?”

“I can’t wait to see where you’re going to take me,” Krissy says as she places the vase with the flowers in the middle of the island. “Mom’s going to be so jealous.”

Connor laughs and takes her by the hand, leading her out to his black Toyota T-100. He opens the passenger door and lets her climb in before he closes it. He hurries around and hops in behind the wheel. “I have a special place to go to take you today.” Connor drives away from her house, excited to take her to their favorite park. Krissy loves walking through the park during the fall.

Krissy turns on the radio and searches for a song to listen to while Connor drives her to wherever he’s taking her. She loves surprises, and he hasn’t told her yet where he’s taking her. Krissy finds a song and sits back, humming as she listens. Connor looks over at her and grins before he turns and heads out of the city. They drive for a few more miles and he turns into the state park that isn’t too far from where they live. He parks and they sit for a moment, enjoying the beautiful scene in front of them.

The leaves have changed and fall has officially set in. Krissy claps her hands and gets out. Connor gets out as well and puts his hand in his pocket, feeling the small box. He can’t wait to ask her to marry him while the leaves fall around them. That is how they met 2 years ago and now he will get to ask her to marry him in the same place in the same setting. Connor lets the box go and locks his truck, hurrying to her side.

“Oh, Connor, it’s our place. We haven’t been here in so long, especially when it’s fall.” Krissy sighs and leans against his arm. “Just look at the falling leaves. It’s like when we first met.”

Connor grins down at her. “I knew you’d want to come back here.” He takes her hand in his and they stroll down the path together, the leaves blanketing the ground around them as they fall. There is a light breeze, but it isn’t too cold. Connor looks at her as they walk, falling in love with her more. He is about to say something when his eye catches sight of something red on a yellow leaf. Connor stops her and walks past her to get a closer look. “Hang on, Krissy.”

Krissy watches him, confused. She glances around, but she didn’t see anyone else there. There are cars in the parking lot, but she doesn’t see anyone else enjoying the park. “Connor, where is everyone?”

Connor kneels down and touches the red liquid. “It looks like blood.”

“Blood?” Krissy pulls Connor away from the bloody leaf and to his feet. “I’m scared, Connor. Please, let’s get out of here.”

Connor nods and looks around the park. “Yeah, I agree, baby. Let’s get out of here.” He grabs her hand and they run back towards the parking lot.

They are almost there when the trees shake and cause the leaves to fall around them. As the leaves fall, Connor and Krissy scream. The leaves slice their skin and draw blood. Their blood drips from the wounds and they grasp each other closer. The trees shake more, causing more leaves to fall, until Connor and Krissy let go of one another.

“Connor?” Krissy screams and swats at the leaves. They bite into her skin, digging in deep.

Connor rips a few leaves off his skin, feeling blood ooze from the new wounds. The edges of the leaves grip his skin as tight as they can until they wiggle and bury themselves. Connor yells and stumbles until he is in the grass. His eyes roll up and he gags, leaves slipping into his mouth and down his throat. His clothes shred and the ring box lays in a puddle of his blood.

Krissy stumbles back until she is in the grass as well. She keeps screaming until the leaves crawl into her mouth, slicing her tongue to keep her quiet. She trips over a root from a tree and lays still. The leaves slide out of her body and the roots from the nearby trees grip her body tightly. They force her into the ground and devour her.

Connor’s head tilts back with his mouth open and a tree sprouts out of it. He makes a few sounds, but they disappear as his life ends. Roots rip through his feet down into the ground while branches slip free from other parts of his body until there is nothing left but a new tree.
