October 19- Bones
Note: Sorry this one is late. I was busy yesterday. The one I need to post today will be posted tomorrow with the prompt for tomorrow as well.
Morgan and her husband, Bryan, walked from their car to the farmhouse. They had read that the farmer had puppies for sale. They had always wanted a puppy and since they were celebrating their first wedding anniversary, Bryan had thought a puppy would be a great gift. He didn’t want her to know about the puppy at first, but since he knew she was a bit picky, he had to take her with him.
Bryan took a hold of Morgan’s hand and they walk to the front door. She can hear yipping and it excites Morgan. She grinned at him. “I can’t believe we are getting a puppy. Thank you,” she said and kissed his cheek.
Bryan grinned and felt his cheeks grow hot. He cleared his throat and knocked on the door. After waiting for a few minutes, the door opened, and a woman peered out at them. “Yes?”
“Good morning, Ma’am. I’m Bryan Knolt. I called you yesterday about your puppies you have for sale.”
The woman’s eyes brightened, and she opened the door. “That’s right. The wedding anniversary puppy.” She looked the couple over for a minute. “Now, our dogs a very special and needs o be taken care of a certain way.” She grabbed something from inside and held it out to Bryan. “Sit here on the porch and read over the list. If you can provide these, then come out to the barn round back and come meet the little monsters.” She laughed at her joke and closed the door.
Bryan and Morgan looked at each other, eyebrows raised, then sat on the swing on the porch to read over the list. Morgan looked at Bryan, who shook his head. “I didn’t know about the list, Hun, sorry.”
Morgan shrugged. “It’s okay. If this isn’t the puppy for us, we’ll know.”
They hunkered down and read.
- Puppy as a strict raw diet.
- Puppy needs special bones from this website. (Morgan pulled out her phone and typed in the website, gasping.)
- Puppy must be walked every morning and evening.
- Puppy must know he or she is loved by his or her owner(s).
- Do not let the puppy or dog, when grown, have other dog food. It must be raw or the dog will run away.
- You must not let the dog out at night, except if you are with him or her. It can be dangerous for others.
- Brush the puppy/dog daily.
- We have a special vet your pup must go to while you have him or her. No other vet will understand the special pup you’re about to adopt.
- Be firm, but not too firm. Scold, but not too harshly. Protect and he or she will protect you for life.
- When you’re done reading this, sign it and bring it with you to the back barn to pick out your new family member.
Morgan looked at Bryan and showed him the website that was provided on the paper. It had all sorts of bones, from lion to wolf to elephant. She raised her eyes when she read the names of animals to Bryan. Bryan just sat there in shock, rereading the list in his hand. Raw meat only? Where are they going to get that kind of meat? They didn’t know any butchers, and it’s going to be expensive feeding the dog. Bryan was about to suggest they look somewhere else when they heard the cutes bark from the back of the house. Bryan walked down the stairs and headed to the side of the house, seeing the barn not too far from the house. Morgan followed behind him and took his hand.
They walked together to the barn and entered. Inside were the farmer and his wife, waiting for them. The couple smiled at Morgan and Bryan and looked at the paperwork.
“Have you signed it then?” the farmer asked and held out his hand.
Bryan looked at the paper and was about to say no when he saw his and Morgan’s signature. When had they signed it? He held out his hand, and the farmer took it. “Signatures are in order. Now you two can pick out your pup.” The farmer and his wife moved back so that Morgan and Bryan could take a look.
Morgan looked confused at Bryan, who just shrugged and walked over to the pin that held the puppies. They looked in and saw ten beautiful reddish brown puppies playing and jumping on one another. On either side sat their mother and father, watching Morgan and Bryan. Their crimson eyes glowed at the couple.
Morgan smiled at the puppies and wondered which one they should take. Just then, a little girl turned her head and stared into hers. She felt her heart tug and knew the little girl puppy was to be theirs. “Her.”
Bryan looked at the puppy she had pointed to and cocked his head to the side. The puppy refused to look at her, but the heftier boy next to her turned and stared at him. Bryan’s eyes widen when he felt as if there was a connection already between himself and the little boy.
The farmer and wife looked at each other, surprised by the outcome. “It looks as if two of our pups have chosen you.” The farmer walked over and whistled, the two puppies running to be picked up. He scooped the two out of the pin and held them out to the couple. Morgan held the girl tight to her chest while Bryan took the boy and instantly started to talk to him.
The puppies’ mom and dad nodded and went to lay with the puppies that were left. Bryan paid for both dogs and the couple walked away, excited to take their new puppies home.
Once they were home, the puppies made themselves at home. “How are we going to get be able to feed two dogs? I was expecting only one.” She looked at the little boy, who almost seemed to glare at her. “But I could never say no to you, little boy. You and your sister are meant to be with us, aren’t you?”
The little boy grinned at her and barked as if agreeing with Morgan. “Now we have to think of names.”
Bryan looked at the puppy that had chosen him and cocked his head. “Bruce.”
Bruce jumped around Bryan, happy with the name. He stopped and looked at Morgan and his sister. Morgan stared into the puppy’s eyes and smiled. “We’ll name you Reyna, because you are our little queen.”
Reyna sat proudly next to Morgan, thrusting out her little chest and barked once. Morgan and Bryan chuckled before they retrieved the dog bowl and water dish.
“Okay, you two be good while we run out and get more things for you, since we weren’t expecting a sweet girl and a handsome boy to come home with us today,” Morgan said as she gently scratched behind their ears. She waved to them as they left to go back to the pet store and get everything else they needed now that they had two dogs.
On their way home, they found a place that sold raw meat and bought enough for two weeks. It was expensive until they told the one who sold the meat why they needed so much. After that, the man, Phil, told the couple to come back to him and he would give them a huge discount. He knew the farmer and his wife and had a dog from them, so he knew how hard it was to find raw meat for the dogs around their area. They had thanked them, and set up a time to bring the puppies by the shop.
They drove home, excited to spend the rest of their day with the puppies. They had bought plenty of toys, a couple of beds, another food and water bowl, and treats. The list hadn’t said they couldn’t give the puppies treats, so they bought them a few bacon tasting treats and some other random treats. They were tempted to buy bones from them, but the list had said to use the website given. Once they were home, they set everything up and sat on the couch, flipping on the TV.
Morgan got on the website and browsed while Bruce and Reyna sat at her feet, watching her closely. Morgan looked over her phone and laughed. “You two are so curious.” She turned her phone so they could see what she was doing. “I’m going to pick you out some delicious bones and have them delivered here in the next couple of days. Sound good?”
Both barked, and their tails wagged happily. Morgan sat back with a grin on her face and got to work ordering bones. Bryan put on their new collars with their tags. They whined and rolled around while they tried to figure out what was around their necks. Bryan slid off the couch and grabbed a ball, rolling it across the room. The puppies barked and chased it, having fun.
A loud bang came at their door, and they looked at each other. They knew exactly who that would be. Their neighbor from across the street. She most likely had seen them bring the puppies home and now was coming over to complain about them even when they hadn’t done anything. Bryan looked at Bruce and groaned. Bruce cocked his head and groaned back. This made him laugh as he pushed himself up and headed for the front door.
Morgan followed behind her husband, arms crossed, and already annoyed. Bryan opened the door, and sure enough, Darla was standing there. She looked around, then spotted the puppies as they bounded up behind Morgan’s legs. They sat down next to Morgan and looked up at her. Darla made a nasty face, then looked at Bryan.
“We have enough dogs on this block and don’t need anymore. You need to return those puppies right away.” She placed her hands on her hips. “No one wants more dogs here.”
“No, Darla, you don’t want any more dogs here. You can’t talk for anyone else,” Bryan said and went to close the door in her face. “The puppies stay!”
Darla stopped the door with her hand and shoved it open, forcing Bryan to take a step back. He nearly stepped on Bruce, but the pup was faster and jumped around to safety. Morgan stepped in front of the woman as she tried to force her way into their house.
“Get out or I’m calling the cops again!” Morgan pulled out her phone and was about to dial for the police when Reyna jumped. The pup jumped high, high enough to grab Darla by the throat.
Darla tried to scream, but Reyna clamped tighter, stopping from any sound to come out. Bruce used his head to push the scared woman inside, then pushed the door closed. Darla staggered this way and that, trying to pull Reyna off her neck. Reyna allowed herself to be pulled off and ripped the woman’s throat as well.
Bruce jumped on Darla’s back and knocked the woman down while Reyna snapped at her face to force the woman to let her go. Morgan and Bryan stared, horrified, as their puppies started to gnaw and eat the woman. Once the puppies had their fill, they ran off to get some water. Bryan and Morgan stared at the body and didn’t know what to say or do.
“Let the puppies know they are loved, no matter what. Protect them at all costs,” Morgan said as she looked at Bryan.
Bryan nodded, and he called their new friend. Phil said he would be over with the right tools right away. When he got there, he surveyed the mess and laughed. “Puppies. They are funny little stinkers, aren’t they?” Phil looked up as Reyna and Bruce walked in to see him. “Oh, what beautiful puppies you have.” Bruce and Reyna smelled his hand when he held it out to them and barked happily when they smelled another dog like them. “These dogs are a special breed of demon dogs. They are the most loyal and sweetest if you raise them right by showing them how much you love them and will protect them no matter what.”
“Did you say demon dog?” Morgan choked out. She looked down into Reyna’s eyes, not wanting to believe that her sweet pup was a demon dog. But she could see Reyna’s crimson eyes glow just like her parents’ eyes had done at the barn. Morgan knew in her heart it was true. “How do we clean this up?”
“Don’t worry about it,” Phil said and laughed. He handed them a card. “This is a group that meets once a week to talk about our dogs, give tips to new owners, and set up playdates. You all should definitely go to the next one, which will be on Wednesday of next week.”
Bryan took the card and stared at it, unable to form words. He didn’t know what to do, so Phil recruited and the men chopped up the body, cleaned off the bones, and put the meat in the freezer with the other meat they had bought for the puppies. Every piece was used, and Phil took quite a bit, too, including the head.
Phil helped them clean the blood, so that there wasn’t a trace. “Don’t worry about the police. We have a few in our group, so they know how to make it seem like she just left without a trace and close the case once someone figures out she’s missing. Does she have any family or friends?”
“No, everyone here hated her, and I heard that her family hated her, too,” Bryan told Phil as they stood in the door.
“Perfect. That’ll make it even easier. Just have the clean-up crew sneak in and get rid of everything in the house and a realtor to sell it. I know a family who just adopted a puppy from another farmer friend of ours. They need a new house and I’m sure that house will be perfect. I’ll get the ball rolling and then at the next meeting we will give you instructions on how to do it yourself if this ever happens again.” Phil winked at the puppies. “And we know it will happen again, don’t we, you little turds?”
Reyna and Bruce barked as their tails wagged. They jumped up and down. Morgan and Bryan thanked Phil and watched him drive away. They turned and looked at the puppies, who just sat staring at them.
“Okay, you two. Now that you have had your fun. Let’s go watch some TV and relax for the rest of the day.” Bryan walked over to the pile of bones. “Now who wants what?” He held up a leg bone and a hip bone with a little meat still left on them.
