October 22- Spirit Communication
Sky, Terry, Topaz, and Rory walked around an antique store with Terry and Topaz’s mom. They had wanted to go to a new place that had opened in the city close to where they lived. They looked over the old items and picked up this and that, but nothing had caught their attention. They wandered away from Mrs. Wallace so they could see more without Mrs. Wallace constantly stopping to look at items.
They found a few cool items, but still nothing they wanted to buy or anything. They had hoped to find some cool new trinkets for their rooms since they liked antiques. They had a lot of other antique items and hoped for more. After another trip around the store, which was pretty big, Sky found an old mirror, Terry found some old dominoes, Topaz found an old top, and Rory found an old telephone. She loved the telephone when she first saw it and held it close.
After they paid, Mrs. Wallace took them back to their house, and the girls ran to the twins’ room. They sat and investigated their finds closer. Rory sat the phone down and pretended to make a few calls. The girls laughed and made calls, too.
When Topaz put the receiver back down, the girls screamed. The phone rang. They crawled back away from the phone as it rang and rang again. Rory crawled forward and picked it up, placing it to her ear.
“He…h…. hello?”
“Hello, dear. How are you?”
Rory’s eyes popped open, and she dropped the phone. She could hear someone talking, so she bravely picked it up and placed it to her ear again. “Nana?”
“Yes, sweety. I asked how you are doing. How’s school? And your friends? Topaz, Terry, and Sky?”
“They uh…they’re doing great, Nana.” Rory cleared her throat. “School is going okay. I’m failing math, so mom hired me a tutor.”
“Oh good. I’m glad you’re getting the help you need.” Nana chuckled. “I never was good at math either, kiddo, so don’t feel too bad.”
Rory’s eyes filled with tears. It was her Nana. She was always supporting Rory and never made her feel bad. Sure, her Nana scolded her, but she also would help Rory in a pinch. She loved her Nana, but her Nana had passed three years ago. “Nana?” Her voice wavered with tears.
“Yes, Rory?”
“How am I talking to you? You’re…you’re dead.” Rory felt the lump growing in her throat.
“The phone, dear. It allows me to talk to you from the beyond,” her Nana said quietly. “I’m glad you found the phone. Now we can talk all the time.”
Rory laughed and looked at her friends, realizing she was still at the twins’ house. “It’s my Nana!”
The girls surround her, and she handed the phone to each friend. They talked for a while on the phone, then Mrs. Wallace came up and disturbed them. “Your parents are here, girls.”
The friends hurried downstairs, excited about the phone. They told Mrs. Wallace about it, but all she said was that they had quite the imagination. Once they said their goodbyes, Rory jumped into the car and instantly told mom about the phone call with Nana.
“That’s nice, dear,” was all her mom said.
When they got home, Rory ran upstairs with her new phone. She sat on her bed and waited for her Nana to call her back. The phone didn’t ring. She picked it up, listened, then hung it up, waiting. Finally, the phone rang.
“Nana! I was scared you wouldn’t call me back,” Rory said as soon as she picked up.
“This isn’t Nana, Rory,” a cruel voice whispered in her ear. “It’s time to join your Nana, though.”
“Wh…. what do you mean?”
“Whoever owns this phone, and answers it when it rings, comes to stay with us,” the voice said. “You answered, so now you belong to us and the beyond. The same with your friends.” Laughter rang into the phone.
The phone grew hot in Rory’s hand and she dropped it, screaming.
Her mom ran into her room and looked around. “Rory? Rory, sweety, where are you?”
She was about to leave when the antique phone rang. She stared at it as it rang and rang. She walked over to it and picked it up. “He…. hello?”
“Hi, mom.”
“Rory?” She covered her mouth and dropped the phone.
