Out of Ideas
Halloween is literally right around the corner! Who is excited? I know I am! This year I will dress up as an Enchantress and my girls will be witches, while my husband bought a cool face mask where you can digitally download a face and is wearing his black robe.
But there have been a few years where I was out of ideas for a costume. I was stumped! Me! The lover of all things Halloween. We usually have our costumes well in advance, but like I said, I had no ideas. So what was I going to do?
Jessica Fletcher
One of my all-time favorite “Author” and character from a book and TV Show is Jessica Fletcher, so perfectly portrayed by the beautiful Angela Lansbury, who sadly has passed this month. So I went into my closet and looked around to see if I could throw something together. I found a nice blouse, slacks, some comfortable shoes, and my coat that my mom had bought me for a birthday a few years prior. I knew exactly what I would wear for my costume. I also carried a book I had to show who I was supposed to be, but I don’t think many people still knew who I was, and that’s okay. My Kierra and I had a lot of fun dressing up. This was back in 2016, I believe.
Writer Gone Crazy
Another year, 2018, I was once again stumped. I didn’t want to do the usual costumes they sold in the stores, so I looked around for some old clothes to experiment with. I found one of my favorite writer’s shirt with a stain and instantly a thought hit me. The shirt read “I do what the voices tell me. (Today they told me to kill the main character. Sometimes I wonder about them.)” And I thought well what would happen if the author went crazy because of the voices of her characters. With the help of Kierra and Ryan, I grabbed black paint and sharpies and we had so much fun drawing on my shirt. I also found some old sweat pants with paint on them and we used those too. We did faces, hand prints (yes the one on the back of my pants is from my husband, hahaha), and made it look like my characters were talking to me. This one has to be one of my favorite costumes and I hope to wear it again one year, especially now that I am published and a few of the quotes on the shirt actually go hand-in-hand with the book that is published, Pahulu Hale.
Researching Writer
The next year, 2019, I again wanted to do something unique and looked at my writer’s shirts to see which one to wear. I didn’t want to mess it up since my other shirts are fine. But I picked one that cracks me up every time I wear it. It reads “I’m a Writer. Not a Serial Killer Despite What My Search History May Lead You To Believe.” So I became a writer who is doing research for their current book. I made my hair messy, grabbed a journal, and a knife. Plus, I did my makeup where I looked just evil and crazy. I have to say, I enjoy making Halloween costumes based around my passion, writing.
‘I didn’t do it’ Detective
In 2020, even though I loved making writer costumes, I decided to do something different. I thought about Jessica Fletcher and how in one episode the detective she was working with was actually the murderer. I grabbed the jacket I had used for the Jessica Fletcher costume and used that, but dressed completely differently. I even ordered myself an old-fashioned magnifying glass to use. I still have it too, though I don’t know where it is right now. Still packed somewhere… I think… I hope. But anyway, I put together the detective who is the murdered but acts like it wasn’t them.
GhostWriter
My latest creation needs a lot of work but I still like it. This past year, 2021, we had just moved to Tennessee, and last year I had wanted to be a Ghost Writer for Halloween. The costume was a disaster so that’s why I came up with the detective costume. But in 2021, I decided to try it again. Bought an old sheet from Goodwill and went from there. This time, I had Ryan cut out the hole for my head. I had tried to do it myself the previous year, and that is why it was a disaster. And the makeup needs to be better, but I still think the costume turned out okay. It was hard keeping that white sheet clean though, so next time I will be the dirty Ghost Writer. I grabbed one of my notebooks, a pen, and there you have- GhostWriter.
New Ideas?
I have yet to come up with new ideas for writer costumes, but I am sure I will. I might even dress up as my characters from my books. People might not know who I am, but I know I would be excited because they are mine. And hey, I can always carry my published book with me so others can see it. Free advertisement for myself, right? I think others should do this from time to time. Dress up as your favorite author or your favorite characters from the books you’ve read. Yes, I know there are Harry Potter costumes and all that, but I am talking about making your own costumes. Dress up like those characters most people may or may not know. Get creative! Have some fun!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I hope you all have a fun and SAFE Halloween always.
Published Book
Here is my published book in case you are interested in a horror/paranormal read for the Halloween spooky season. I hope if you buy it, you will enjoy it. Sadly, I know there are a few mistakes. I am sorry about that. This is my first and still learning. But even with the mistakes, I am still very proud of my book.
