October 8- Brewing
(I was busy yesterday, so I wasn’t able to upload this one. I am still writing today’s short story and will post that one tonight. Thanks for being patient with me.)
Mary watched her colleagues walk around the office at their annual Halloween party. She smiled behind her white mask of her fairy godmother costume as she stood behind a bubbling cauldron she had brought. She laid her hands on the table as people walked past. One stopped and looked into the cauldron as smoke slipped out over the sides.
“What’s brewing in there, Mary?”
“It’s cauldron juice. I made it special for you guys today.” Mary smile and picked up a cup, pouring in an enticing purple liquid into it. “Would you like some, Nate?”
Nate shrugged and took it. “I hope it’s better than those brownies you brought in a few weeks ago.” He laughed at Mary and walked off, sipping the cauldron juice. His eyebrows shot up and he looked at her. “Wow.”
Mary just smiled and handed out more glasses of cauldron juice. Soon there was a glass in every hand of those she worked with. Mary hummed as she cleaned up. The party kept going on while she washed the cauldron in the sink in the kitchen, scrubbing every square inch of it. Mary rinsed it out, dried it, and walked out of the kitchen.
Nate walked over to her with an empty glass. He saw the cauldron empty in her hands and pouted. “I was hoping you had more of that cauldron juice.”
“Sorry, Nate, I guess I haven’t made enough. I’m exhausted and heading home anyway,” she said with a grin on her face. “Glad you liked the cauldron juice I brewed for you all.” An evil gleam shone in her eye, but he hadn’t noticed.
Nate was about to say something when he heard someone coughing behind him. He looked to see his coworkers were collapsing, grabbing at their throat. One was even on their hands and knees, throwing up blood. Nate stared at his friends in horror as they each laid on the ground with blood sliding out of their mouth.
“What is going on?” Nate turned to look at Mary. “What did you do?”
Mary shrugged. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I just gave you all what you deserved. You all bullied me for the last time.” She turned, her big ballroom godmother dress swishing behind her. She waved over her hand and Nate just stared at her.
Nate felt a burning in his throat. He coughed, trying to clear his throat. His vision blurs and he collapsed to the ground. He laid there and listened. Beyond his breathing, he couldn’t hear anything else. Everyone else was dead. He knew his time would come, and he closed his eyes.
Mary stood on the elevator with a grin on her face as she gently cradled the cauldron in her arms. The doors closed, shutting out the gruesome sight of her colleagues dead on the floor. She laughed and sighed, her smile never leaving her face. Mary had gotten the last laugh.
